Sophia House

Next Dinner- September 6th

The Fourth of July weekend dinner at Sophie House was hosted by the following generous and reliable volunteers from Kol Shalom: Kate Sugarman, Ziva Rubin, Steve Schwartz, Nancy Light, Keren Zuckerstein, and Michael Lazar. The residents of the energency shelter for homeless women dined on homemade meat loaf, corn on the cob, Caesar salad, ratatouille, chocolate chip cookies, iced tea and punch.

A cool supper of assorted salads, beverages, homemade cake and sugar-free Jell-O was served to the residents of Sophia House on August second by members of Kol Shalom. The volunteer caterers were: Sylvia and Len Sheeskin, Ziva Rubin, Kate Sugarman and Steve Schwartz.

Every month, on the first Monday, volunteers from Kol Shalom prepare and serve dinner to the residents of the emergency shelter for homeless women, which is located on Wilkens Avenue in Rockville close to the Parklawn Building.

We prepare the food in our homes and serve dinner at around 6:30 to the thirty women who are staying at the shelter. Their ages range from young adulthood to old age. They are of all educational and ethnic backgrounds. Some are dealing with multiple challenges, such as medical issues, mental illness and addictions, in addition to homelessness, but most are aware of our caring to provide a home cooked meal for them. Many express their appreciation and chat with us during and after the meal.

If you would like information on taking part in this very worthwhile (and enjoyable) project, contact Sandra Schwartz, ssketzel@aol.com.
