The kidnapping and forced baptism of a Jewish child by the Vatican outraged mid-19th century Europe and became a factor in limiting the Pope’s power in Italy. Kol Shalom’s book discussion group will review this history and the sacred v. secular struggle in David Kertzer’s The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara.
