Digital advertisers are always looking for a leg up on their competition. The best advertisers target you where you are, and know what you’re searching for. What products you buy, what movies you watch, what causes you care about, and which candidates you support. However, when does the targeting cross the line? We’ll discuss digital advertising, how it works today, and some controversial areas such as racial and ethnic profiling, religious or political pandering, and targeting teens, seniors, and low-income individuals.

Jeff Rum is the Chief Marketing Officer at CMRignite, a leading social impact and cause marketing agency. Prior to his current role, Jeff founded and served as CEO of Ignite Digital Strategy Group, a full-service marketing firm which was acquired by Creative Marketing Resources (CMR) in December 2021, forming CMRignite.

An award-winning creative director, author and public speaker, Jeff has 20+ years of experience in strategic marketing and communications, brand strategy and entrepreneurship. Jeff has led campaigns for major brands such as Bose, Fossil, PepsiCo, and Marriott. In addition, he has consulted on projects with nonprofits including Human Rights Campaign, UN Foundation, and the Chaim Sheba Medical Center at Tel HaShomer. 

In 2014, Jeff served as a digital consultant with the Obama administration to launch My Brother’s Keeper, a public-private partnership to promote intervention by civic leaders in the lives of young men of color to address their unique challenges and to promote racial justice.

As a volunteer, Jeff served as co-chair of National Young Leadership Cabinet of Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA) in 2017-18. Jeff recently served on the Executive Committee of The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington as co-chair of Strategic Planning & Allocations. He currently serves on Federation’s Finance Committee and the Board of Directors. 

In 2015, Jeff completed the Zin Fellowship, a two-year leadership development program with Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.

Jeff received a B.A. from American University in Communication: Visual Media. He received his M.A. in International Studies from Georgetown University. He has three children, Eva, Max, and Ori and resides in Bethesda, Maryland.
