Steve Mandel, on behalf of the Critical Issues Forum, is pleased to report that the Montgomery County Council voted to reverse a decision made last May to delay badly needed construction because of budget shortfalls. On December 1, the Montgomery County Council unanimously voted to approve supplemental funding to rebuild South Lake Elementary School (Gaithersburg) starting in 2021.
South Lake is one of the poorest schools in the County, and the building is overcrowded and in terrible condition. The Critical Issues Forum has been advocating for a new school building for several years.
The Critical Issues Forum (an advocacy group comprised of members of Temple Beth Ami, Adat Shalom, and Kol Shalom) has been at the forefront of several issues over the last few years. Kol Shalom members made an important impact in May by providing hundreds of dollars in gift cards for the school’s families.
