Kol Shalom’s book group will read Isabel Wilkerson’s highly acclaimed Caste: The Origins of our Discontents for its next selection. Considering caste to be a rigid hierarchy of human rankings underlying American racism and other oppressive regimes, Wilkerson explores the “pillars” that are common to the caste systems of America, India, and Nazi Germany. She humanizes her research with riveting stories of individuals whose everyday experiences are shaped by the caste system. Discussions are informal and all readers are invited whenever they can participate.
