Chicken Hill – where immigrant Jews and Blacks live side-by-side in Pottstown, PA, sharing their sorrows and ambitions – is the setting of James McBride’s The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store. The new novel by the acclaimed author of The Color of Water and other books is the next selection for Kol Shalom’s book group. In a recent interview, McBride said he wrote the book to “give some love” to his Jewish grandmother, who had little in her life. Discussions are informal and readers are welcome whenever they would like to participate.
