Overcoming Difference: A Remarkable Pathway to Healing the Israeli-Palestinian Divide

February 13, 2022
11:15 am - 12:15 pm

With Rabbi Hanan Schlesinger and Noor A’wad from Roots

Sunday, February 13th at 11:15am on Zoom

A Jewish Teen Leadership Institute hosted program.

When Rabbi Hanan Schlesinger bravely decided one day to cross over by foot from his Jewish West Bank settlement over to a neighboring Palestinian village, a remarkable thing occurred–he met not bloodthirsty terrorists, but human beings yearning to live in peace.  And in meeting Rabbi Schlesinger, the Palestinians discovered not a terrifying oppressor, but a fellow traveler who yearned for a better life and homeland just the way they did.  From this experience, an organization known as Roots began to develop. Over the years, Roots has brought Palestinians and Israelis–including former Palestinian combatants together with Ultra-Orthodox settlers, and the results have been remarkable and inspiring.  The Jewish Teen Leadership Institute invites the community to join with its remarkable teen leaders as they encounter Rabbi Schlesinger and Mr. A’wad and learn from their remarkable stories and example.

More about Roots:

A unique network of local Palestinians and Israelis who have come to see each other as the partners we both need to make changes to end our conflict. Based on a mutual recognition of each People’s connection to the Land, Roots is developing understanding and solidarity despite our ideological differences. Roots is a place where local peoples can take responsibility. Their work is aimed at challenging the assumptions our communities hold about each other, building trust and creating a new discourse around the conflict in our respective societies. This is a grassroots and local model for making change — from the bottom up.
