The Search for a Path to Sustaining Public Faith in Public Education

The March Tikkun Talk is presented by Shirley Brandman on Zoom. Click here to join.

As a child of immigrants, my story – like so many others—begins with parents coming to the United States seeking a better future. Public schools, intended to be the great equalizer, offered the promise of transformative opportunity in a single generation, and delivered on that promise for my sister and for me.  Schools boards are the guardians of public education.  The current attack on school boards seeks, in part, to undermine faith in public education. For concerned citizens who believe in creating universal opportunity the goal must be to resist that effort and to change the narrative.

In 2006, Shirley Brandman was elected to the Montgomery County, MD Board of Education where she served for two terms (8 years) including two years as President of the Board. Shirley remains actively engaged in education advocacy serving as a strategic advisor to Montgomery County’s Black and Brown Coalition for Educational Equity and Excellence. She is also Chair of the Board of Advisors for the Universities at Shady Grove, a  regional higher education center under the University System of Maryland.

The Zoom link will appear on the website 15 minutes prior to the Tikkun Talk. Shirley will accept questions from participants at the end of her presentation.
